Have you heard that ringing sound? That's the headhunters calling. IT professionals are back in high demand, and that's helping to create more security for those on the IT career path. In addition, IT staffers and managers are feeling more secure about their jobs and are less concerned with job stability than in recent years. But don't breathe too deeply. Now more than ever, IT professionals need to take a good hard look at their skill sets. More than half come from a technology-oriented background, whereas most companies are looking for people who can balance technology initiatives and business needs.
Experience with new technologies such as Ajax, Web 2.0 applications, SOA, and wireless is critical to future success in IT. Some are taking matters into their own hands by paying for training and certification out of their own pockets. Many companies are focused on employee retention and are offering career development opportunities such as training and certifications. It's clear that IT professionals need to actively manage their career development so they're not left behind.
